1200×1200 Plastic Pallets: How to Compare Deck and Runner Designs

1200x1200 reinforced three-runner grid plastic pallet

A 1200×1200 mm footprint narrows the search for a plastic pallet, but it does not finish the selection. Two pallets with the same outside dimensions can behave differently because their deck, runners, reinforcement and handling clearances are not the same.

Before requesting a quotation, buyers should look beyond the nominal size and describe how the pallet will actually be used. The points below provide a practical way to compare the available designs without assuming that one structure suits every operation.

What the 1200×1200 size tells you

The square footprint tells you the pallet’s outside length and width. It helps when checking the available floor area, load footprint, storage layout and transport plan. It does not, by itself, confirm whether the pallet is suitable for a particular rack, pallet jack, conveyor or unit load.

Start by confirming that the goods fit inside the pallet footprint without excessive overhang. Then check the actual support points underneath the load. Cartons, bags, drums and rigid containers place pressure on the deck in different ways, even when their total weight is similar.

Three-runner grid deck designs

A grid deck leaves open areas across the upper surface. This can reduce material in the deck and allows air, dust or water to pass through more easily than on a closed surface. Three runners provide continuous support along the underside, which may suit some forklift, floor-stacking and storage arrangements.

The grid pattern still needs to match the goods. Small cartons, flexible bags or feet on a container may need closer deck support than a rigid load with a broad base. Buyers should also confirm fork opening dimensions instead of relying only on the phrase “four-way entry.”

Zhenghao currently offers more than one product in this general format, including an assembled three-runner grid deck pallet and a reinforced three-runner grid deck pallet. These are separate product configurations. Their exact construction and working limits should be checked against the intended application rather than treated as interchangeable.

Flat top three-runner designs

A flat top provides a more continuous contact surface. It can be useful when the load has small contact points, flexible packaging or a base that needs more even support. The closed surface may also be easier to wipe than an open grid, although the cleaning procedure still depends on the product design and the operating environment.

The 1200×1200 flat top three-runner pallet is an example of this approach. A flat deck should not automatically be described as better than a grid deck. The relevant question is whether its surface, underside and handling openings fit the load and equipment.

Check the handling equipment before choosing

Forklift and pallet jack use should be checked separately. A forklift can lift through openings that may not provide enough clearance for a pallet jack’s wheels, linkage or turning movement. Runner layout can also affect where the load is supported during travel.

Send the supplier the fork width, fork thickness, outside fork spacing and required entry direction. For manual handling, include pallet jack wheel size and lowered fork height. Our plastic pallet jack handling guide explains why a visual check of the openings is not enough.

Floor storage, stacking and racking are different conditions

A load rating has meaning only when the support condition is clear. A pallet resting on a level floor is supported differently from one moving on forklift tines or spanning rack beams. Stacking introduces another set of contact points because the upper load is transferred through the pallets and products below it.

Do not use a static-load figure as proof of rack capacity. If racking is required, provide the clear span, beam arrangement, load distribution, temperature and expected storage time. Reinforcement may be available on some configurations, but the final arrangement still needs to be checked for the specific rack. For the basic terminology, see our guide to static, dynamic and racking load ratings.

Information to send with an enquiry

A useful enquiry for a 1200×1200 pallet should include:

  • the goods, packaging type and total unit-load weight;
  • how the load contacts the deck and whether overhang is permitted;
  • forklift or pallet jack dimensions and required entry direction;
  • whether the pallet will be used on the floor, stacked, racked or conveyed;
  • rack beam spacing or conveyor support layout, where applicable;
  • operating temperature, cleaning needs and indoor or outdoor use;
  • whether the pallet is for a closed loop or an export shipment.

Providing these details allows the supplier to compare actual product configurations instead of selecting from dimensions alone. You can review the current 1200×1200 plastic pallet range and then confirm the deck, runner and reinforcement arrangement for your handling system.
