Pharmaceutical packaging moves through a controlled supply chain, but the pallet still has to do ordinary physical work. It supports cartons or containers, moves through loading areas, may wait in storage, and has to fit the equipment used at the site. Buyers should start with those conditions before choosing a deck or base design.
Match the deck to the packaging base
Cartons, drums, totes and protective containers do not load a pallet in the same way. Record the footprint of the packed unit, the support points underneath it, the maximum stack height and whether the load is wrapped. A flat deck can provide broad support for some cartons. A grid deck may be suitable where drainage or lower weight matters. The correct choice depends on the actual pack base, not on a generic pallet description.
Keep hygiene requirements specific
Cleanable surfaces and a practical inspection routine matter in pharmaceutical packaging areas. Buyers should review corners, ribs, runner transitions and recessed areas against their own cleaning method. If a site has a particular material, cleaning-chemical or compliance requirement, it should be confirmed with the supplier before ordering. A general plastic pallet listing is not proof that a pallet meets every regulated use.
Separate handling from storage conditions
Forklift movement, pallet-jack movement, conveyor transfer and rack storage are different operating conditions. Confirm the entry direction, equipment clearance and contact points with the actual trucks and transfer stations. If loaded pallets will enter beam racking, review the beam arrangement, supported span, load distribution and applicable rack-load rating. A high static-load figure alone does not answer a racking question.
Plan for traceability without changing the basic selection process
Some operations need pallet identification through a label, barcode, RFID tag or another tracking method. Treat that as part of the purchase specification. It should not replace the basic questions about load support, handling route and cleaning. State where any identifier will be placed and whether it must remain readable after normal cleaning and handling.
Questions to send with an enquiry
- What does the packed load contact on the pallet deck?
- What are the maximum loaded weight and stack height?
- Which handling equipment and entry direction are used?
- Will the pallet be stored on the floor, in a vehicle, in racking or on a conveyor?
- What cleaning method, temperature range and traceability requirement apply?
