Agricultural loads rarely follow one fixed pattern. A pallet may be used below field crates, packed produce, feed bags or containers before it moves through a packing area, cold store, vehicle or distribution point. The useful starting point is the load and handling route, not the pallet colour or a general heavy-duty label.
Start with the load that will sit on the pallet
Record the outside footprint of the packed load, total loaded weight and expected overhang. Crates, cartons, bags and bulk containers do not all contact a deck in the same way. A load with narrow contact points needs a different review from a broad, stable crate base.
Also check whether the load pattern changes with the season. A pallet that suits one crate format may leave another format partly unsupported.
Match the deck to the pack base
Grid and flat decks provide different contact patterns. The choice should reflect the underside of the crate or carton, drainage needs and the way the load is restrained. Do not assume that a ventilated deck or a closed deck is automatically right for every produce load.
Check the real handling route
Ask how the pallet will be lifted, moved and staged. Forklift entry, pallet-jack wheel paths, turning space and entry direction all matter. If the route includes more than one type of equipment, confirm each stage with the actual pallet model.
Handling access alone does not prove suitability for racking, conveyor systems or loaded stacking. Those conditions need their own support and load review.
Separate floor storage, transport and racking
A pallet resting on a floor is supported differently from one carried by forks or placed on racking. Transport can add vibration and restraint forces. For racking, the span, support points and load distribution must be checked against the specific pallet and rack arrangement.
Do not use a static-load figure as a substitute for a dynamic or racking assessment.
Include cleaning and operating conditions
Produce handling may involve moisture, soil, wash-down routines or cold storage. Tell the supplier how the pallet is cleaned, how often it is reused and whether it will move between different operating areas. These details help narrow the appropriate material, deck and base options without making assumptions from a product photo.
Plan for empty-pallet returns
If pallets return empty, nesting or stacking method can affect vehicle and storage space. That benefit should be assessed separately from loaded use. A structure that saves room when empty still needs to support the loaded unit safely through its intended route.
