Choosing between a grid deck and a flat deck is not simply a matter of appearance. The top surface affects how a load makes contact with the pallet, how loose debris or liquid behaves, and how the pallet can be cleaned. The right choice depends on the product, packaging and operating conditions.
The deck is only one part of the pallet. Its runners, legs, reinforcement and overall construction must still be checked separately. A grid deck is not automatically rackable, and a flat deck does not automatically suit every hygiene application.
What “grid deck” and “flat deck” describe
A grid deck has an open pattern across part of the top surface. A flat deck has a mostly continuous top surface. These terms describe the upper deck, not the complete base structure.
Two pallets with similar-looking tops may have different undersides. One may use three runners, another may have a nine-leg base, and another may be double-sided. Those differences affect handling and support, so buyers should not select a pallet from a top-view photo alone.
When a grid deck may be the practical choice
Openings in a grid deck can give loose debris or liquid a path through the surface instead of leaving everything on top. This can be useful where drainage matters or where the pallet is regularly rinsed. The actual result depends on the size and layout of the openings.
The load still needs enough contact with the deck. Small cartons, bags with flexible bases, or products with narrow feet may bridge the openings differently from rigid containers. Check whether the load remains stable and whether any part of the packaging can press into the grid.

Before choosing a grid deck, ask:
- Is drainage useful in the working area?
- Can the packaging sit securely across the openings?
- Could small items, straps or loose material catch in the grid?
- How will the pallet be inspected and cleaned?
- Does the selected model have the required base and load ratings?

When a flat deck may be the better fit
A flat deck gives cartons, bags and other loads a continuous contact surface. It can also reduce the chance of small items or loose packaging edges entering deck openings. In some cleaning routines, a broad surface is straightforward to wipe and inspect.
That continuous surface changes how water, dust or spilled material behaves. Liquid has fewer paths through the deck and may need to be removed from the surface. Edges, seams and underside details still need inspection; “flat deck” does not mean that the complete pallet has no areas that can collect residue.

Questions for a flat-deck application include:
- Does the load need full, continuous support underneath?
- Will liquid or debris be present during use?
- Is wiping the top surface part of the cleaning process?
- Are there drainage or drying requirements?
- Is the underside suitable for the intended equipment and storage method?

Deck type does not determine load capacity
Static, dynamic and racking loads describe different operating conditions. They cannot be treated as one interchangeable number, and the deck style alone does not establish any of them.

Check the base and handling method separately
The underside determines how forks enter and how the pallet is supported. Three-runner, six-runner, nine-leg and double-sided designs are not interchangeable. The correct base depends on the actual route through the warehouse.

For racking, provide the rack support direction, clear span, loaded weight and load distribution. Do not rely on the word “rackable” without confirming the exact model and operating conditions.
Information to include with an enquiry
A useful request for quotation should describe the job, not just ask for a grid or flat deck. Include:
- Required pallet footprint and any height limit
- Product and packaging placed on the pallet
- Loaded weight and whether the load is evenly distributed
- Static storage, transport, stacking or racking conditions
- Forklift or pallet jack use, including entry direction
- Cleaning, drainage and drying requirements
- Temperature range and contact with water, oil or chemicals
- Expected order quantity and any colour, logo or tracking requirements
