Nestable plastic pallets can reduce the space taken by empty pallets because the legs or feet fit partly inside the pallet below. That makes them useful in one-way shipping, closed-loop distribution and return routes where empty equipment takes up costly floor or vehicle space.
Nesting alone does not make a pallet suitable for a job. Buyers still need to check the loaded pallet, handling equipment and the condition in which empty pallets will be stacked. A low empty-stack height has little value if the deck does not support the packages or the pallet jack cannot travel through the base.
Start with the empty return route
Map what happens after the goods are unloaded. Record how many empty pallets must be stored, how they are collected, the vehicle used for return and whether workers separate the stack by hand or forklift.
The useful figure is not only the height of one pallet. Ask for the nesting pitch, which is the extra height added by each pallet in a nested stack. This allows a buyer to estimate the actual stack height for 10, 20 or 50 empty pallets. It also helps check door clearance, trailer height and safe handling limits.
The nestable plastic pallet range includes different footprints and deck designs. The correct model depends on the full handling route, not just the number of pallets that fit in a stack.
Check whether the base really nests
Nine-leg and similar footed bases are often designed to enter the openings of the pallet below. However, not every pallet with nine feet is nestable. Some bases are fixed in a way that prevents meaningful nesting.
Ask for an underside image and a side view of a nested stack. These show the leg shape, contact points and how far one pallet enters another. They also reveal whether the stack leans or whether projecting edges could catch during separation.

The 1100 x 1100 nestable FIBC pallet provides a clear example of a base designed for nesting. Its published product information identifies an 1100 x 1100 x 100 mm footprint, a 6 kg pallet weight and HDPE material. Its open underside also makes the nesting structure easy to inspect.
Match the deck to the load
A grid deck can reduce pallet weight and allow airflow or drainage. The openings still need to match the load. Small cartons, flexible bags and packages with narrow feet may need more continuous support than a large rigid container.
Check the contact area between the goods and the deck. If bags are used, consider whether they can sag into large openings. For cartons, look at the bottom-board strength and how the boxes are arranged. A pallet should be evaluated with the actual load pattern rather than a single total weight.
Confirm forklift and pallet jack access
Forklift entry and pallet jack travel are separate questions. A forklift only needs a suitable fork opening and stable lifting path. A hand pallet truck also needs space for its load wheels to enter, roll and lower without striking the pallet feet or deck.
Do not rely on “four-way entry” by itself. Ask for the opening height, fork-pocket width, wheel path and the type of pallet jack used at the facility. The practical guide to plastic pallet jack handling explains these checks in more detail.
Separate empty nesting from loaded stacking
Empty pallets may nest closely, but that does not prove they can carry a loaded pallet on top. Loaded stacking places force through the goods, deck and base. The packaging strength and contact points become part of the system.
Ask the supplier to distinguish among empty nesting, empty stacking and loaded stacking. If loaded pallets will be stacked, provide the product weight, package shape, contact area and planned stack height. A photograph of an empty nested stack is not evidence of loaded stacking capacity.
Compare real pallet formats
Nestable pallets are available in several sizes and deck layouts. For example, the 1200 x 1000 lightweight nine-leg logistics pallet has a published 1200 x 1000 x 140 mm size and an 8 kg weight. Its product summary lists PP or HDPE and a nestable design.

Another option is the 1100 x 1100 nine-leg grid pallet. Its current product information lists a 1100 x 1100 x 145 mm size, a 9 kg weight and PP or HDPE. The different footprint may suit a different package or loading plan even though both products use a nine-leg layout.
These examples should not be chosen from weight or dimensions alone. Compare the deck, base, actual load and handling route before deciding.
Information to send with an inquiry
A useful nestable pallet inquiry should include:
- required pallet length, width and maximum empty-stack height;
- goods type, package footprint and loaded weight;
- number of empty pallets in each return stack;
- forklift and pallet jack models used;
- entry direction and wheel-path requirements;
- whether loaded floor stacking is required;
- operating temperature and cleaning method;
- shipment quantity and whether the route is one-way or reusable.
If return-space savings are part of the business case, request a stack-height calculation based on the actual nesting pitch. This is more useful than a general percentage claim because it can be checked against the vehicle and warehouse layout.
Selection point
Nestable plastic pallets work best when the empty return route is planned alongside the loaded trip. Confirm the nesting pitch, deck support, handling access and stacking condition before ordering. Once those details are clear, the supplier can compare existing models without treating every nine-leg pallet as the same product.
