Large plastic pallets are often specified for bulky goods, wide containers, industrial parts or loads that do not fit common 1200 x 1000 mm and 1200 x 800 mm footprints. Choosing one is not simply a matter of ordering a larger deck. As the footprint grows, the base structure, support points and handling route become more important.

Before requesting a quotation, buyers should define the load unit and the way the pallet will move through the facility. These details narrow the choice much faster than a general request for a “heavy-duty large pallet.”

Start with the load footprint

Measure the goods, packaging and any overhang allowance as one load unit. A pallet that is too small leaves the goods unsupported. An unnecessarily large pallet consumes floor and transport space and may not fit the available handling equipment.

The required size should also be checked against doorways, conveyor widths, storage lanes, truck loading plans and turning space. For less common dimensions, the other plastic pallet sizes range provides a useful starting point, but the final choice still depends on the operating route.

Compare the base structure

Large pallets can use different bottom structures. A six-runner base provides broad support beneath the deck and can suit floor handling or stacking plans when the load and support conditions have been confirmed. A double-faced pallet has a full lower deck and is often considered when stable loaded stacking is part of the job.

These structures are not interchangeable. Double-faced pallets are generally handled by forklift rather than a standard hand pallet truck. If workers must use a pallet jack, confirm the opening height, fork path and wheel movement before selecting the pallet.

The 1400 x 1200 six-runner grid pallet is one example of a large one-piece pallet. Its published specification lists a 1400 x 1200 x 150 mm footprint and four-way fork entry. Buyers should still match the actual load and support method to the project.

Do not treat every load rating as the same

Static, dynamic and racking loads describe different conditions. Static load applies when the pallet is resting on a level floor. Dynamic load applies while it is being lifted and moved. Racking load depends on how the pallet is supported across the rack opening.

Check the rack before calling a pallet rackable

For beam racking, provide the clear span, support direction, number of beams or rails, expected load distribution and storage temperature. Steel reinforcement may increase stiffness, but the tube arrangement must match the pallet and the support pattern.

The 1400 x 1400 double-faced welded grid pallet has a published racking load and an optional internal steel-tube arrangement. That does not make it suitable for every rack. The buyer should still provide the actual beam span and load pattern for review.

Plan floor stacking separately

When loaded pallets will be stacked on the floor, the lower deck must distribute the upper load without damaging the goods below. Double-faced and picture-frame style bases are often considered for this reason. Product stability, packaging strength and stack height also matter.

Do not use an empty-pallet stacking photograph as proof of loaded stacking performance. Ask for the loaded condition, contact points and maximum intended stack height. Uneven cartons, bags or bins can change the way force passes through the pallet.

For a larger square footprint, the 1500 x 1500 double-faced welded pallet provides another real product reference. Its structure differs from a six-runner pallet, so the correct choice depends on the handling and stacking plan rather than dimensions alone.

Consider material and operating temperature

PP and HDPE do not behave identically under impact, temperature and long-term loading. The right material depends on the plant environment, cleaning method, exposure conditions and expected reuse cycle. A cold room, outdoor yard and warm production area may require different checks.

If the pallet will contact food packaging or be cleaned with chemicals, provide the cleaning process and any material or documentation requirement. Avoid assuming that a grid deck or a particular colour automatically proves hygiene or food-contact suitability.

Send a usable inquiry

A useful request for a large plastic pallet should include:

  • required length, width and maximum height;
  • goods type and load distribution;
  • static, moving, racking and loaded-stacking conditions;
  • forklift type, fork spacing and entry direction;
  • whether a hand pallet truck is required;
  • rack span or conveyor support layout;
  • operating temperature and cleaning method;
  • expected quantity and reuse route.

Photographs or a simple drawing of the load and support points can prevent a wrong recommendation. If several operations use the same pallet, describe each one. The most demanding step often determines the required structure.

Final selection point

Large plastic pallets should be selected as part of a handling system. Footprint, base design, support conditions and equipment need to work together. Once these details are known, a supplier can compare existing large-format products and identify whether a standard model is suitable or whether a different configuration needs review.
